21st Century Community Learning Centers foster holistic learning and community engagement

The Lana Learn team in Washington, DC is fostering student enrichment with its 21st Century Community Learning Centers programming.

In today’s world, education is not limited to the confines of the classroom. To foster holistic learning and community engagement, schools are embracing innovative programs that bridge the gap between formal education and real-world experiences. One such initiative is the establishment of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program.

The 21st CCLC initiative offers a comprehensive approach to learning by extending education beyond traditional classroom hours. These programs provide students with opportunities to engage in extracurricular enrichment activities. They promote academic achievement, personal growth, and community involvement.

As the summer sun begins to wane, a feeling of excitement surrounds Lana’s 21st CCLC team. It’s that time of the year again – a time of new beginnings, renewed friendships, and boundless possibilities. What better way to kick off the school year and the program than with a meet and greet to get to know the families and students at Cardozo Education Campus?

The event was an opportunity for students to meet their teachers, learn about the exciting courses ahead, connect with their peers, and explore extracurricular activities. We looked at the meet and greet as an opportunity to talk with the students and parents about their needs and interests. These insights allow us to tailor the program accordingly.

Student voice and parent engagement are key components in our 21st CCLC program. We posed the question, “What would your ideal after school program look like (or include)?” We learned that parents value activities that help their students succeed in the classroom such as tutoring and homework help. Student interests included culinary arts, fine arts, dance, and beauty topics such as learning to do makeup and nails.

As the school year gets underway, we will work to include the students interests and foster strong parent engagement. The connections made and the spirit ignited during this event will hopefully carry forward with momentum. Thus, setting the tone for collaborative learning, personal growth, and collective achievement in the 21st CCLC program.
