The Lana Learn team gets involved with Community Learning Center Program activities that provide academic enrichment opportunities for students.
This month, our new Academic Coach, Jasmine Coombs, begin work on our 21st Century Community Learning Center program. This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children. It targets students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. Our goal is to help students meet state and local academic standards in core academic subjects. We provide students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs. We offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
Lana Learn is executing this program alongside the Latino Student Fund (LSF) at Cardozo High School. Jasmine has been shadowing LSF at Cardozo to learn about the programming that is provided to the students there. She has been observing their Te Guio and Listo programs. Te Guio serves 9th-10th graders through mentorship activities, social and emotional learning, and academic support. Listo serves 11th-12th graders through academic support, college readiness activities and trips, exposure to post-secondary options, and team building exercises.
Last week, program students participated in an escape room designed by LSF in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Students had a great time working together in small teams to solve clues. Additionally, students spent time role playing appropriate and inappropriate ways to handle certain emotions. This activity is a part of the social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. They also wrote letters to students in orphanages in Peru as a part of the community service aspect of programming.
Jasmine has been happy to help out with LSF programming as she works on developing rapport with the regularly attending students. She is excited to begin work growing the program and reaching more students at Cardozo High School through academic tutoring.
