Our Program Manager, Matt, welcomes cohort 07 to the English Language Training Program at Unit 871 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
As we welcome Cohort 07, we are excited to begin another six-month journey of language development, professional growth, and international engagement. The program remains focused on equipping students with the English skills needed to support future education, training, and cooperation opportunities. The structure and goals of Cohort 07 continue the same commitment to excellence highlighted in Lana Learn’s previous cohorts.
Cohort 07 Intake
Following the intake process, 52 students were selected and placed into four classes based on their English Comprehension Level and demonstrated readiness for the program. Students were grouped according to their ALCPT intake scores to ensure instruction can be tailored to their current proficiency level. Cohort 07 includes officers representing a broad cross-section of Vietnam’s armed forces. Students in this cohort represent the Army, Navy, Air Defense-Air Force, Border Guard, and Coast Guard.
The four classes were organized as follows:
- Class Alpha (13 students) – Average ALCPT Score: 46.8
- Class Bravo (13 students) – Average ALCPT Score: 35.5
- Class Charlie (13 students) – Average ALCPT Score: 30.8
- Class Delta (13 students) – Average ALCPT Score: 27.0
Overall, the accepted cohort entered the program with ALCPT scores ranging from 24 to 63. This provides instructors with a solid foundation for differentiated instruction while maintaining balanced class compositions.
Data-Driven Student Placement
One of the strengths of the ELTP is its commitment to placing students where they can achieve the greatest success. All accepted students completed the American Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT), which assesses listening and reading proficiency. We carefully balanced class enrollment to create cohesive learning environments while ensuring students receive appropriate instructional support.
The result is a cohort with clearly defined learning pathways. Alpha Class will focus on accelerating higher-proficiency learners, while Bravo, Charlie, and Delta Classes will strengthen core language foundations. Every student enters the program with unique strengths and challenges, and our instructors are prepared to meet those needs from day one.
Instructing Students for Success
Through face-to-face instruction, language laboratory activities, speaking practice, pronunciation coaching, and ongoing formative assessment, instructors will help students develop the listening, speaking, reading, and communication skills required for professional and military contexts. This instructional approach reflects the same student-centered methodology that has supported previous cohorts at Unit 871.
Looking Ahead
The start of a new cohort is always an exciting moment. Over the coming months, Cohort 07 students will work through the American Language Course curriculum, complete regular assessments, and build the confidence needed to use English in practical and professional settings. Along the way, they will develop not only language skills but also the persistence, discipline, and collaborative mindset that characterize successful learners.
Lana Learn remains grateful for the continued support of the Office of Defense Cooperation, AFSAT, and our partners within the Ministry of National Defense. Together, we are helping create meaningful learning opportunities that strengthen professional development and enhance future engagement opportunities.
We look forward to sharing Cohort 07’s progress in the months ahead and celebrating the achievements that will come from the hard work of both students and instructors. Welcome to Cohort 07, and best wishes for a successful term.
