Our Unit 871 ESL Instructor, Amanda, provides a helpful list of proven methods she uses to help students prepare for the ALCPT.
Preparing for the ALCPT exam takes more than memorizing words. It requires smart strategies and consistent practice. In my classroom, I combine proven methods with engaging tools to help students succeed.
Use Online Tools Often
Repetition is key. I use Quizzes to help students practice vocabulary, grammar, and listening. These tools are available anytime. Students can repeat exercises as often as they want. This builds confidence and improves retention.
Review Grammar Regularly
Grammar is a major part of the ALCPT. I’ve created extra worksheets that match the grammar we study in class. These help students review and apply what they’ve learned. Focusing on sentence structure and verb forms strengthens understanding.
Grow Vocabulary Strategically
Each week, I introduce new words from higher-level books (levels 20–30). These words are not in our regular lessons. This exposes students to more advanced vocabulary they may see on the test. Learning words in context and using flashcards, videos, or images improves recall.
Weekly Book Reviews
We revisit one book each week to review grammar and vocabulary. This helps students remember past lessons. It also reinforces key concepts. Reviewing old material is one of the best ways to prepare.
Gamify the Experience
Learning should be fun. I use Bamboozle and Quizlet to turn review into games. Students play in teams or solo. Healthy competition among students is a great motivator. These games also provide immediate feedback on mistakes. This allows students to learn from errors right away. It also gives me the chance to explain concepts and address gaps in knowledge.
Practice Listening Daily
Listening is a big part of the ALCPT. Students should listen to English daily. This includes podcasts, videos, and practice tests. Understanding spoken instructions and conversations is essential for success.
Explore Extra Resources
To support learning outside the classroom, I’ve created a list of online resources. These include practice tests and ALCPT games that focus on reading, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Students can use them anytime to reinforce their skills and track their progress.
Final Thoughts
Effective ALCPT prep blends strategy with creativity. By using online tools, reviewing often, and making learning fun, students build the skills they need. My goal is to help them feel confident and ready. With the right support, success is within reach.
