Mathematics Growth at Thurgood Marshall Academy’s HIT Program

Our Academic Coach, Hailey, provides an exciting update demonstrating significant mathematics growth at TMA’s HIT Program with Lana Learn.

For the last five months, I have had the delight of working with Thurgood Marshall Academy’s Math Department as a High-Impact Tutor. I have watched students grow in their academics, skill acquisition, and dedication to learning. Over the last semester, students struggled with attendance, belief in their own capabilities, and learning new material at such a quick pace. Regardless of the challenges TMA students faced, they grew a tremendous amount. In particular, students demonstrated a high level of mathematics growth. Here are some of the accomplishments I’ve observed from students:

Growth Highlights

  • The student with the most growth grew 43 percentage points from their Quarter 2 to Quarter 4 final grade.
  • At the end of the first semester, only 10 students of 24 (42%) were currently passing the year in their mathematics courses. At the end of the second semester, 18 students of 24 (75%) of students raised their grades to pass their mathematics courses.
  • From Quarter 2 to Quarter 4, 18 students of 24 (83%) demonstrated academic growth in their mathematics courses, even if they did not pass the course.
  • At the end of the second semester, 21 students of 24 (~88%) report that they feel more confident in their mathematic skills moving into the next academic year.

Overall, students either demonstrated growth or maintained their grades throughout the year. The biggest takeaway from this data set is that students have academic resiliency, the ability to grow despite adversity, or remain consistent with an evolving curriculum. Academic resiliency is important for these students as they face lower levels of student efficacy, the belief in themselves performing well academically. These data points illustrate the effectiveness of the High-Impact Tutoring program at Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School. Lana Learn is incredibly proud of these students for their commitment to the program over the last 5 months. Their hard work has clearly paid off, and these students now have a strong foundation for the next academic year.
