Our HIT Program Manager, Maya, discusses the conclusion of the High-Impact Tutoring Program and looks ahead to the future.
After two impactful years, we are concluding our High-Impact Tutoring (HIT) Program in Washington, DC. Funded by a grant from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), this program began in January 2023. By February 2023, Lana had quickly assembled a team and launched the program at four schools: IDEA Public Charter School, Thurgood Marshall Academy, Theodore Roosevelt High School, and H.D. Woodson High School.
Throughout the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years, and during summer school at all four locations, we proudly served three cohorts of students. While it’s difficult to end this chapter, we remain optimistic that HIT services will continue through other funding sources soon.
In September, we focused on finalizing the remaining tasks for the HIT program. As the HIT Program Manager, I have been diligently preparing the final data reports and compiling the annual report for OSSE, in addition to handling budget and amendment matters. While this administrative work can seem tedious, we’ve also taken time to celebrate the program’s achievements.
On September 10th, OSSE hosted a virtual HIT Celebration to highlight the success of the program and recognize the efforts of each grantee. The event offered an opportunity for HIT providers to share best practices and reflect on lessons learned, with an engaging trivia competition adding a fun, interactive element to the occasion. It was a special way to commemorate the conclusion of this meaningful program.
Looking Ahead to Future Opportunities
Though our current HIT program is ending, this is not the end of HIT in DC, and hopefully not for Lana Learn. We are awaiting word from the Office of Contracting and Procurement about the possibility of continuing our HIT services. Additionally, OSSE is reviewing applications for a HIT Local Education Agency (LEA) grant, which several of our partner schools have applied for. We remain optimistic that these opportunities will allow us to continue serving students soon.
For now, we celebrate the program, our exceptional Academic Coaches, our partnerships with OSSE and the four schools, and, most importantly, the 288 students we had the privilege of supporting!
