High-Impact Tutoring is Making Strides at H.D. Woodson

Our Academic Coach, Howard, discusses the recent successes of the High-Impact Tutoring program at H.D. Woodson in Washington, DC.

Mr. Finley, “we had a very engaging in math class today the students were focused and worked collaboratively learning and practicing factoring numbers.” The comment came from a 9th grade Algebra teacher at H. D. Woodson Senior High School highlighting the positive impact of a tutor from the High-Impact-Tutoring (HIT) program providing academic assistance to students in the classroom. High-Impact Tutoring goes beyond improving test scores. It builds strong relationships between teachers, students, and tutors in the program.

High-Impact Tutoring goes beyond academic gains of the students. It offers a systematic method to educational improvement. Tutors encourage the students to take risks and develop both academically and socially-emotionally. The tutor in the HIT Program at Woodson works with a small group of students (4:1 student-teacher ratio). Provides consistent frequent interactions in and out of the classrooms. Employed targeted and purposeful instruction align with the class curriculum.

Tutors strive to answer the “why” by helping students make the connections between what they learn in the classroom and how they live. It’s a transformative approach to learning with studies showing students can double or triple their progress. It is a scalable, comprehensive solution.

The students in the H.I.T. Program like the personal attention and its benefits. When done well this method will significantly improve student’s academic performance raising career expectations creating a delectable meal satisfying the learning appetite of students as they positively progress through high school and beyond.
