District Scholars Award granted to after school program participants

21st CCLC students have been awarded the American University District Scholars Award due to their hard work and dedication.

It’s springtime in Washington, DC, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom reminding us of starting anew. The students of our 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program are looking forward to new beginnings of their own. We are proud to share that two of our program attendees, Roger and Kevin, have been selected for the American University District Scholars Award. This highly competitive award includes a full-tuition scholarship, as well as full coverage for room and board at American University.

Dedication Leads to Achievement

When Roger realized that he had received this award, he was speechless. We learned of his acceptance from Ms. Villacorta, the College and Career Counselor at Cardozo Education Campus. When he regained his ability to speak, he exclaimed “shout out to Jasmine and Matt – they showed me how to make my essays shine!” We were able to offer Roger our congratulations directly, reminding him that it was his dedication that led to this achievement. We spent many hours with Roger providing feedback on essays, gathering FAFSA information, as well as providing tutoring for his schoolwork. American University is Roger’s top-choice school, and he plans to enroll in Fall 2024 to begin his studies in accounting.

Future Educator in the Making

Kevin’s reaction to receiving the reward resembled shock, though we remain unsurprised by his success. Kevin is a top-performing student at Cardozo. His mission is to utilize his love of literature to help underserved students reach their greatest academic potential. This drive has led Kevin to declare his intention to major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. We have worked with Kevin since September 2023. Through consistent attendance of one-on-one coaching, he has grown tremendously both personally and academically. While he remains undecided about which college to attend this fall, he has been accepted to several high-ranking schools such as Howard University and the University of Michigan. Undoubtedly, Kevin will make an amazing future educator no matter where he decides to attend college.

Consistent delivery of one-on-one coaching for college and career preparation allows Lana Learn’s students to reach new heights. We strive to instill in our students that a commitment to one’s education leads to a bright future. Kevin and Roger’s success is a direct result of their dedication to academic and personal excellence, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.
