Our Unit 871 ESL Instructor, Ben, remarks on the importance of starting strong at the beginning of a new English language training cohort.
Joining a new team can be challenging. Established routines, processes, and responsibilities are already in place. It’s an exciting process to join Lana Learn at the start of Cohort 07.
Starting with the Right Support
A successful onboarding experience can make a major difference. New instructors need more than information. They need guidance, context, and people they can turn to for support. Nick, our Supervisory ESL Instructor, played an important role in making that process smooth. The onboarding introduced key aspects of the company and the program. It also provided a clear understanding of expectations and daily responsibilities. This kind of support helps new team members become productive without feeling overwhelmed.
Learning by Doing
Good onboarding should not stop with presentations and paperwork. Practical experience is just as important. Observing classes provides a valuable introduction to teaching routines and classroom expectations. Getting familiar with the ALC curriculum and course books helps new instructors understand the course structure and materials.
The onboarding schedule also included several practical tasks. These activities helped turn what was learned during onboarding into practical experience. Combining classroom observations, curriculum training, and practical tasks makes the transition into the team much smoother.
Building a Supportive Team
Onboarding is also about becoming part of a team. The instructors at Lana Learn have created a welcoming and supportive environment. That matters when someone is new to the team and still learning how things work. A strong team makes it easier to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from others. It also creates opportunities for experienced instructors to share knowledge with newer team members. When people support one another, everyone benefits. New instructors gain confidence, while experienced team members strengthen the team around them.
More Than an Introduction
Effective onboarding is more than completing a checklist. It is about creating the foundation for someone to contribute successfully. A clear introduction to the company, curriculum, systems, and expectations helps new instructors become confident in their role. Support from experienced colleagues makes that process even stronger.
Joining a new team always comes with challenges. However, good onboarding and a supportive team can make that transition much easier. The goal is not simply to help someone get started. It is to help them become a confident, useful, and trusted member of the team.
