In ESL classrooms, even the best activity can fail if students do not understand what to do. From my experience, giving clear instructions is one of the most important teaching skills. It directly affects how smoothly a lesson runs and how much students learn.
Why Students Get Confused
Students often feel confused when instructions are too long or unclear. If teachers explain too much at once, learners may lose focus. This is especially true when instructions are given in English.
Sometimes, students may understand the language but not the task. They may not know how to start, what the goal is, or how much time they have. When this happens, they hesitate, ask many questions, or do the task incorrectly. This can slow down the whole lesson.
Common Mistakes Teachers Make
One common mistake is giving instructions that are too detailed. Teachers may try to explain everything at once. This can overwhelm students.
Another mistake is not checking understanding. Teachers may assume students understand because they are quiet. However, silence does not always mean understanding.

How I Give Instructions in My Class

After giving instructions, I check understanding. I ask simple questions like, “What do you do first?” or “Are you working alone or in pairs?” This helps confirm that students are ready to start.
I also use the board to support my instructions. Writing key steps or examples helps students remember what to do.
