Stepping in to Substitute as an Educational Leader

Our DC Program Director, Jordan, speaks on the importance of stepping in to substitute when needed as an administrator.

In July, I had the rare opportunity to substitute several times for our staff working directly with youth at our sports and workforce development summer program at Cardozo Education Campus. This “throwback” experience for me was a reminder of both the challenges and rewards inherent in our direct service to youth.  As the Program Director, it was invaluable to step back into the day-to-day activities and experience them firsthand.

Our integration of sports and youth development at Cardozo presents a unique set of challenges. Managing the high energy and diverse interests of students in a sports-focused environment requires adaptability and patience. Balancing their enthusiasm for athletics with the structured demands of job training is no small feat. There are moments when it is difficult to shift the focus from the excitement of the sports activity to the concentration needed for life skills-building. These challenges highlight the importance of innovative engagement strategies and the need to create a smooth blend of physical activity and cognitive rigor.

However, the rewards of this experience were equally significant. The resilience of the students is truly inspiring to observe.  Witnessing their commitment to both athletic and life pursuits was a testament to their drive and determination.  These successes underscored the profound impact of our holistic approach, which nurtures both mind and body, fostering well-rounded development.

Substituting at Cardozo also reinforced the importance of supporting school-based staff. The frontline experience provided valuable insights into the daily realities and challenges they face and the crucial role they play in our mission. It emphasized the need for continuous professional development, adequate resources, and a supportive work environment to enable our team to excel.

In summary, my time substituting at Cardozo High School was both humbling and enlightening. It reaffirmed my appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our staff and the significant impact we have on our students’ lives.
